When I got home today, I looked out my windows to see nothing. Void. White noise. I knew that nearly the entire city can be seen and yet it isn't there. My outside world has become something of an ambient radio show about the city. This is an unexpected occurrence. Not because I can't grasp the concept of zero visibility when there is this much moisture in the air, but I simply never thought about it before from up here. The most interesting thing about it is its beauty.

It makes me want to hear nothing just for a while again. Pure silence. When was the last time you heard nothing?

sass- It was unsettling at first. Then a kind of serenity came over me.

nat- You would be surprised how deafening it can be...

I've not heard "nothing" in a long time. I have tinnitus and some days the noise in my head is overwhelming ... on days like that, quiet is the worst place to be. The sound of the wind is good, the sound of water is good ... I doubt I'll ever hear silence again. Listen for me.

Well, there have certainly been times when I've said, "I didn't hear nuthin'"...

Actually, in a past life I used to run a press in a manufacturing plant. We would clean the machines using these giant air guns and would have to put on ear protection to keep from blowing our ear drums out. That truly was like hearing nothing except your own self breathe. Kinda like a cross of being Darth Vader and Dave from 2001 doing a space walk at the same time...

What was that Lucas movie that you showed me a while back. The one that doesn't completely suck? There is a scene in that movie where the main character is stripped of context as a imprisonment. He just wanders through a seemingly infinite white space. Thats the feeling I get when I'm caught in a thick fog. There is a great scene in the Heart of Darkness by Conrad where the river boat is in a similar situation. Fog... Silence... and then arrows. This scene is repeated almost exactly by Copala in Apocalypse Now. There is just something about that white schroud blanketing your entire vantage. Spooky.

Silence is golden, but I can't pay the price.

I want to run away to the forest, and listen to the trees groan.

hj- I have to wait for it myself. It is rare after all.

john- your account of working reminds me of a guy I know recently described what its like to be in a SD tank. Weird stuff.
